What is Mulberry Silk?

Mulberry silk is a type of silk that is 100% natural, odourless, and hypoallergenic. Mulberry silk contains a natural protein fibre called sericin, which reduces allergic reactions.

Mulberry silk specifically has its name because of the type of silkworm (Bombyx Mori) and diet (Mulberry leaves) it’s provided.  The silkworm is provided a pampered life in comparison to wild silkworms. 

Each silkworm is provided plenty of food in the form of white Mulberry leaves which are easy to chew and consume. They are provided a controlled environment where nothing can startle or cause harm to them. 

This is where Mulberry silk is formed. During the process of larva (caterpillar) into moth, the silkworms create cocoons around themselves. The cocoon is then used for creating silk material. The cocoon is the smoothest and whitest that exists because of the purity of the white mulberry leaf.

What is 22 Momme?

Momme is the term used for the measurements of weight of silk. The lower the momme, the less silk was spun, the less durable the material will be. The higher the momme, the heavier the silk, meaning more silk was spun to create the material (aka your pillowcase).

What is the Difference vs. Regular Silk?

The question is...WHY the difference?

For comparison, silk produced from wild silkworms who feast on whatever plants are available to them produce a silk called tussar. Tussar is often more brittle and rougher in texture as compared to the smoothness of mulberry silk.
